Beware having it done outside a dealer or competent VAG specialist. I understand it's not just a case of undoing the plug and pouring in a couple of litres of old-fashioned slush box auto fluid. Shop around as well. The equivalent job for my Audi multitronic box was daylight robbery at my local dealer, but over £100 cheaper at the next nearest franchise.

At least its on a mileage basis, not time expired like the ridiculous 4 year cambelt scam. In the US there's no time limit for a cambelt, just a very healthy mileage receommendation.

Had my DSG service done last year by my local VW dealer as I was advised that its every 4 years or 40k whichever comes first - cost £150 all in for oil and fiilter change, my car had 32k on the clock and was nearly five years old at the point of service.

I took 2 DSG cars in for service this time last year at 4 years old. In both cases the handover sheet was marked up "cambelt due" (at about 10k each) but no comment about gearbox.

My previous Audi was definately mileage only, not time. They didn't miss a trick stiffing me for several hundred quid as soon as it got over the magic 40k, but I'll stand corrected if VW have moved the goalposts in order to generate revenue for their dealers.

For the Passat '98 to '05 Tiptronic there's some good DIY info at:
    http://www.taligentx.com/passat/maintenance/atfchange/

For others, Blauparts gives some good info
(mine's the '06 Tiptronic 09G series which they say started appearing in 2005)
    http://www.blauparts.com/vw/vw_fluid...html#whattouse

    Hope that helps costswise

Welp, I'm gonna change mine for the reasons given by Blauparts in my previous post's URL
The US supplement for "2009 and 2010" models quotes the 09G gearbox: "no filter
    replacement is needed"
This, from the same people who told us "it's filled for life (sir)"

That explains it, I should have read your Sig!

The 09G gearbox is a "conventional" automatic with planetary gears and brake bands like you would find in a 1970s Ford Granada. The VW version was manufactured by AISIN of Japan. Tiptronic was originally the VAG designation for a conventional auto with flappy paddles. Fluid top ups and changes of these boxes are entirely strightforward, as they have been for years.

The Tiptronic is still used by VAG for all of the bigger, more powerful engines. The rest of us get either the Multitronic (Daf type "rubber band" continuously variable) gearbox or the double clutch DSG. Both are significantly more economical and don't dent the power output from the engine, but changing the gearbox oil needs specialist kit.
