    Overall I can't believe that VW thought a couple of M6 machine screws would be sufficient for such a high load attachment that is subjected to repeated stresses and shocks.

    I had no problems getting VW to order me the screws (didn't even need to pre-pay) - the only thing I would say about using non-genuine screws is the VW parts have a thread lock compound pre-applied (not that it stopped my original ones from unwinding). So use some Loctite when fitting new ones.

    The pockets where the hinges go seem to be closed so you shouldn't lose a nut - I dropped mine many times but never had one lost forever.

    Have to agree that it seems fairly unimpressive engineering only relying on only a single screw per side - but the problem seems to be that they unwind themselves and then bend/snap. Non HT screws would almost certainly fail in tension without needing to loosen off first

    What is impressive is that the motors with minimal leverage can swing that big heavy tailgate so effortlessly.

    I'm revisiting this thread as the other bolt has now sheared. Interestingly (for me at least) this one was not loose, it was tightly fastened but it still sheared. Confirms to me that the design is not up to the job. Now contemplating if I can get the screw stud out of the hinge without all the dismantling.

    Bummer. I sold the earlier Passat last year and bought a new 206TSi R-Line The newer model has done away with the motors bolted onto the hinges for a design that uses motorised struts (linear actuators). Much more civilised, rather then closing with a slam, the boot is carefully and quietly squeezed close.

    I'm glad they sorted that out. I did manage to replace the bolt and have a box of spare HT bolts - expecting this to be a regular thing!
