    Hi

I am new to the Forum (after spending years on the OmegaOwners with my Omega Elite), but I have now bought what seems to be a wonderful example of an Audi A6 Avant S-line.

My first query (no doubt there will be many) concerns the battery. We have a motorhome which is used irregularly and so often needs extra power to start initially, and with the Omega we just connected to the battery.

The handbook indicates that one should not connect to both connections in the engine bay, but attach the -ve to a solid chassis connection (which seems somewhat hard to find), and yet in the boot the symbols seem to indicate do NOT connect to the battery terminals.

Can anyone advise on the relative advantages/disadvantages of trying to use the battery directly?

    Many thanks in advance

    Bill Cooper

p.s I have tried a search and can find not a suitable topic?

the worst thing to do with a lead acid battery is to allow it to discharge . this dramatically shortens their life expectancy. personally i would spend £50 odd on a ctek charger that can be left connected to the motorhome. your battery will be then fully charged every time you need it. jump starting with any modern vehicle is controversial and can cause damage, so really best avoided unless protection is used.

With any vehicle you should not connect the final jump connection to the battery as a matter of safety. Any battery will produce hydrogen and any spark near to the battery may ignite this hydrogen. This is why they say not to connect directly to the battery - The A6 is provided with jump points in the engine compartment that should meet your requirements - be very careful not to short this as you will do some damage ! a dead short will pull a few hundred amps and melt wiring. Wed an old Porsche that needed regular jumps and got into a routine - Hook the leads to the dead battery red + and black - keep them separate ! start the donor engine. Hook the red + to the battery + Post in the engine bay - In the audi its top left of the engine bay with a cover. Hook the neg to a good solid metal part of the engine. Start the flat vehicle and then disconnect the + from the donor car and keep this away from any metal ! Id usually hold that clip and then go and unhook the clip from the now started vehicle.

Id refrain from trying to use the battery in the boot direct.

    Hi,

I'd second the advice above. The connections you need to the battery can be found top left hand side of the engine, both + and -, the + being protected under a red cap, pic below, double click to enlarge. Have you considered a larger (100w or higher) solar panel to keep the battery topped up? I have one and they are great as they largely free you from hook up whilst travelling.

Thanks for all the advice - The van is in a secure storage and so no option for a charger - I go over every month with an invertor generator which I run for a couple of hours - that keeps the battery at a reasonable level, but starting after say 5 months of winter is sometimes too much.

I saw the connections in the engine bay - but was scratting around looking for a suitably rugged negative post - too much plastic and painted metal - will have another look.

Thought about a solar panel the van has the connection already - but we cover it for winter which precludes that option and in the summer we are on sites with EHU often enough for the problem to be minimised.

But thanks for all the replies - such prompt action is to be commended.

    Bill

just a thought but what about a booster pack. basically a battery with jump leads designed to jump dead cars. something like this but probably a better more expensive one. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PORTABLE-P...#ht_1193wt_877

You should always connect the -VE through a chassis point as it provides a reasonable amount of resistance that would otherwise blow sensitive electronic equipment.

The -ve to a chassis isnt for resistance - its the last and first point to be disconnected and its a good distance away from the battery - the main issue is getting any sparks produced away from the battery. Once that point is disconnected the two electrical systems are floating and there should be no current flow.
