Got in the car this morning, turned the key in the ignition, the engine turned over, then died. Tried a few times, same result. I recognised the symptoms as an unhappy immobilizer, so asked 'er indoors to try the spare key (after I borrowed her car to get to work...) and it starts fine. I understand the latest immobilizers use a rolling code, so I guess the code has got out of sync - but what causes it to roll? Does the immo code roll every time you press one of the remote locking buttons? I expect a visit to the dealer will be required to resync the key?

This has been talked about before if you do a search.

Key Fob stopped working MK6 Golf

The re-sync instruction should be in the handbook or Goole this problem.

    Keith,

it's not the remote fob - it's the immobiliser portion of the key he's having issues with.

OP - I've not worked on any of the newer tech keys so presume a dealer visit will be required to recode it.

Does the remote portion of the key still work - IE does the car unlock by the fob?

Have you been playing with the fob by repeatedly pressing the buttons when away from the car ?

Not intentionally, though I had the key in my trouser pocket while I was swapping the winter and summer wheels yesterday evening, which made me think it might have been something like that (I once found the car windows open one morning - after I had been crawling about under floorboards with the key in my pocket!).

In any case, I tried the first key again this evening, and it started OK! Maybe I was wrong about it being an immobilizer problem.... need to keep an eye on this...
