Hi, have a very similar problem with my 3.0tdi A5.
My thermostat took ages to reach around 65 and would not get higher unless I idled for a long time. The VAG correctly showed the temp as displayed by the temp gauge and if I was on a run the temp would drop to 60 or even lower so I decided to go to the garage and enquire about a thermostat as it looked far too cramped in there for me to attempt.
The job took just over 2 hours, a new Audi thermostat and housing was fitted and BINGO, the temp very quickly got to 90 and sat there all the time, there was no need to strip the front off the car and be charged 10 hours for doing it.
The total cost with labour and part should not exceed £200, hope this helps

A lot of problems with this thermostat on all cars using them. I plan to use the kind of trans cooler you have on your car to warm up the trans fluid on my 2011 3.0 TDI A6 and I don't want to use that thermostat. I will try to use coolant returning from the cabin heater and not from the radiator like I believe yours is set up.

I have hot running at low or no speed with coolant over 105*C and no fans on except when the A/C is on. And radiator return temperature was over 100*C. More info here ZF 6HP19A tiptronic gearbox (A6 3.0 TDI Quattro) - Page 36
I am told the fans willonly turn on at 110*C coolant temperature and I don't believe that. I find it hard to believe that a car that monitors radiator return temperature and can use all sorts of inputs to decide it is time to turn on the fans will only turn them on above 110*C. What do you guys think?

I have answers in the mentioned thread as far as radiator fans turning on only above 105*C. I believe it is just another compromise the factory made to heat the engine oil over 100*C but that means overheating the trans fluid in my opinion. Regardless what kind of coolant/trans fluid cooler is being used, the trans fluid will get up and over 100*C.
Like I said I will install an external air/oil cooler thermostatically controlled and use factory coolant/oil cooler to warm up the fluid faster but I need to use different coolant feed to this than snapdragon has on his car. Feeding from the cabin heater lines is not a good idea since coolant does not go there all the time. I need to find other lines to intercept.
