Had a message 'tyre pressure system fault' earlier in the week when temp was -1.5c. Disappeared on its own and not seen since.

    Anything I can check?

Also how does the system work - electronics in the tyres transmitting something to the car or by monitoring the wheel speeds?

They are monitored by the ABS module which checks the rotation of each wheel in relation to what it should be. If you had that warning Id guess at your tyre pressures being close to a pressure that would trigger the warning. So id ensure your tyre pressures are correct and then store them in the MMI and you should be ok.
