No idea how accurate or reliable the MMI display is (although in the above link it does suggest that it's the oil warning light which would ultimately warn the driver of low oil level). Personally, I prefer a manual check anyway, especially when topping up - a dipstick can never fail or go out of spec, any electronic sensor can, and eventually will.

From experience over the last few years I would say the sump sensor is extremely accurate and always correlates with the dip stick. The reason for the dipstick is speed as the MMI takes a while to respond.

Good to know. I'm still glad I ordered the dipstick as I'm not sodding around getting in and out of the car and turning it on and off to fill the oil up. Like you say, speed is sometimes an issue. Life's short.

Hi just wanted to check I am purchasing a 2011 2.0TDI Q5. ( i know this is the a4 engine but I understand they share engines)
    I prefer old fashioned dipsticks.
    2 questions
    1) with the T40178 tool the settings of 46 0 24 on the Laser website says it is for the 2009 TDI engine. Will this work for my 2011 2.0TDI?
    2) What is the amount of oil between the min and max mark ? is it 1 litre?
    3) Is the dipstick tube easily accessible? is the bung under the enginecover.

    Thanks for help in advance.

    Hi to All,
yes the Audi dipstick removal did cause some angst. My new A4b8 2010 arrived less the dipstick. Audi response was that home wrenchers may check the oil on an unlevel surface, introduce the wrong oil, misread the dipstick and introduce dirt and contamination, so WE made it easier for car owners. After repeated attempts to purchase a dip stick (although Audi indicated that nothing existed ) I managed to purchase one from Korea, exactly the same as diagram indicated in an earlier post.
I reported this on this Forum but got no takers or interest. I trust current Audi's have reintroduced a dipstick.
    Regards
    John
