It's worth checking that the brakes aren't sticking on. Chock the front wheels and jack up the rear wheels one at a time. They should turn freely, albeit with a little rubbing noise. (Obviously with handbrake off.......) The rear discs in particular tend to accumulate rust around their periphery which then works its way over the surface. If they are rubbing, a good mechanic should be able to chip the rust off, which is cheaper than new discs and pads. The pads also tend to stick in the calipers - about 3 years old is often when these little games start. Front discs are more tricky to check. Any friendly garages nearby who could check them out for you? Ironically, powerful cars with effective disc brakes are often prone to such problems when driven gently. That's life!

Hi Steve, these engines are definitely sensitive to temperature. This may be an issue with mine if a temp sensor is defective, but that should show at diagnostics. With the recent higher temps, my TDI s is returning 65-66mpg, but the TDI se is 46-47 and I'm driving both like a fairy. Oh and they are both filled at the same garage (Esso). I'm sure I will get to the bottom of the problem eventually!

Hi there, I stumbled on this thread as I have the same car spec as yours. I too have queried why I have such bad fuel economy...I only average 44.7mpg based on over 2 month analysis. Surely our cars can't be that way off from official figures? Did you happen to get to the bottom of it?
