    Hi.

Well all the bits arrived to re-wire the tuner, nav and BOSE amp via a switched relay. Bit of a fiddle but all in now, no scotchlocks were used and installed so that it can be put back as was if needed with no cutting or any original wiring etc. Also updated to 5570 today, it was at 1110 so I had to go to 5150 before 5570. All in with no issues, restored the battery level meter so will now see how it goes.

Thanks again to all for the excellent help, really appreciated.

    Andy

    Hi there,
I know this thread is quite old now but I am experiencing the same problem with my A6 3.2 Avant. 2005.
Car struggles to start first thing in morning, but always starts eventually. Car will then start straight away at other times if not left for too long.

I have replaced battery with an original equipment one and also have replaced alternater as this was only reading 13.8 when charging.
The problem has not got any better.

I took the car to an Audi specialist in Ulverston and they said that the car had loads of fault codes stored witch mainly were down to low voltage. They said that the car started first time and that they could not find anything wrong after fault codes were removed. They kept car overnight and the car started ok in the morning. I collected car later that day and everything was fine till next morning and the car strggled to start again.
I thought i would start to check fuses to see if they are draining battery and the fuse in the compartment on the right in the boot (avant) was reading 01.2MA I think it said battery management on the cover.
The fuse in the passenger side fuse box labelled communications was reading 05.8 MA. I not sure if this is on the high side but these are the only 2 fuses with a reading. The question is are the above fuses anything to do with the above posts?

I am not sure if the MMI has been updated to the latest version but I have noticed that there are 2 different MMI discs in the car and the car has got FASH.

If anyone can help I would appeciate it as I really love this car but it really annoys me when things dont work right.

    Thanks Mark..

Hi, guys new to the site, Have Audi A6 2.7 TDI 56 plate started to have same issues as described. Now being the second family car not used daily and battery draining now and then. Had auto electrician look at it yesterday and he confirmed that the MMI system is stopping the car shutting down as radio is still on. He stated i need a software update. This is where I am stuck! I have basic MMI ( red display ). Can anyone tell me what update I need I looked at an Audi TSB which stated part number 4F0906961 AB but i think this is a USA part number. The TSB is dated 5 March 2007 number 2014127/1 which describes the fault to a tee. Audi what £138 just to look at it again and Im sure they will state I need a new MMI system.
    Any help appreciated.

    Hi,

I'm not convinced the MMI software version is the key here, could be wrong.

I would look at pinpointing items that could be draining the battery, when I looked into it suspects included:

    - Aftermarket items such as bluetooth phone, ipod interface etc.
    - Radio unit
    - Amp
    - Navigation

Are you confident you battery is healthy and the alternator is charging properly?

Firstly I would check in VCDS if the battery regulator is coded. In my case it wasn't. This meant it had no idea how to control the charge/discharge of the battery. Example VCDS log for this before realising and properly coding:

Address 61: Battery Regul. Labels: 4F0-910-181.lbl
    Part No SW: 4F0 910 181 E HW: 4F0 915 181 A
    Component: ENERGIEMANAGER H12 0470
    Revision: 00000000 Serial number: 00000000013427
    Shop #: WSC 00000 000 00000
    VCID: 2341EBBF9B45

    Component: von
    Coding: 000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
    Shop #: WSC 00000 000 00000

    No fault code found.

Note all the zero's in the coding section. After correct programming done it now reads:
    Coding: 303030393135313035444B54553332323138483631313436

This can change if a battery is replaced and is of a different capacity.

If you need to change this, details on how to are here:
    Audi A8 (4E) Battery Replacement - Ross-Tech Wiki

Next if that is all good, I'd be looking to isolate the culprit.

I'd remove the fuses for the boot based suspect items (Radio, nav, amp) temporarily. I'd make sure the battery was properly charged and then take them out and see if the battery drain issue goes. If it does you then test or eliminate which one it is.

For me the cheapest option (as recommended by a fellow member on here) was then to wire these items up via an ignition switched relay, that meant they only got power when the car ignition is on. I still have the radio and amp connected in this way, the GPS was reconnected a while back and it's all been good.

Details of these fuses (located in the brown fuse section in the drivers side boot side section) are in the manual which I'm afraid I don't have to hand. From memory they were brown 15 amp fuses, 3 or them in a row.

    Hope this helps.

    Andy

Batteries do not drain themselves. I had the same issue my car is a 2005 3.0tdi quattro. I had the battery manager software updated, as there is a bug in it , to confirm it is the radio, try switching it off before switching car off, do this with a long press off the power button by gearstick.

I ended up putting the fuse for all the audio and sat nav in the boot on a switched relay - so when car is off, all that crap is off, switch car on and it comes on.

My car still has its original 110Ah battery from new - starts every time.
I have registered to say Big thank you to you my friend for saving lots of money and time. Audi said my sat nav unit needs changing for ££££ cost. Thing is tho it works fine apart battery draining issue, so taking the fuses out 5 & 8 in the boot solved the problem but created new one lmo... no music in the car lol. (when driving long distances I always put them back on) Now I will be doing relay fuse as you stated for radio and sat nav which costs pennies compare to what i already spent and was going to spend. After new year somebody will put it for me but I was wondering how easy it is to fit? Im thinking to do it myself b4 Christmas maybe.

Thanks again for opening new door to solution

Hi Andy, I just read your post. Good you solved the problem! Have you managed it yourself? Just wondered how difficult it is, i have not got vcds if anything will need coding or something. I know where these fuses are as I have them off. No:5, 7,8 in a raw. 2x 5amp radio sat nav and 1x 30amp for sound system. Only keeping 2x 5 amps off as if there is now radio or sat nav speakers wont operate themselves

    Kind regards

    Josef

    Hi Josef,

Ok there were 2 things I did. Firstly my battery manager was not coded at all, for this you do need VCDS to both check and code. For the relay no you don't need VCDS.

Since then I've replaced the fuse for the NAV so it has power all the time and all good. Radio and Bose amp still on the ignition switched relay. When it's warmer I will check as it may be now they can go back but TBH happy as they are. I put nav back as I found if on a boat or underground car park it would take up to 10 mins to aquire GPS which was an increasing problem if I needed Nav to decide on autoroute direction !

As to how easy it is, I found it OK but I'm stronger in wiring than say plumbing or woodwork. You need to be able to solder or properly crimp, and use the right parts, scotchlocks IMO are not a good way to go, and always properly fuse things, so fuse where you take the ignition power source, fuse for the permanent live supply to relay, and fuse for each of the relay fed supplies to the nav, amp and tuner. Also use same fuses as in the car, namely blade fuses or you will end up needing to keep different types for spares. Also use the correct rated wire, so you can get away with thinner 3amp wire for the ignition feed to relay, but much thicker wire for the rest of it.

Quick overview is you have to tap into ignition switched power source (none in boot so comes from drivers side of dashboard) fuse and neatly run cabling to boot area, then knock up a proper relay and neat cabling to tap into the fusebox. Again this needs to be fused properly and make secure connections, the amp can draw a bit of power so loose or under rated wiring will affect it.

If you are okay with that, go for it, if not I don't think a good automotive electrician would charge too much. Always best to do things properly, don't take shortcuts.

My friend who deals with imported Jap cars, many of which get turned into campers, or have accessories fitted at home, have had fires which have been traced to bad wiring alterations. In that case the insurance companies are increasingly not paying out.

One thing I noticed, if I just took out the radio fuse, I could hear my BOSE amp clicking, and on test it was drawing power. May be different in your car mind.

Hope this helps Josef, just do things steady and carefully and all will be well.

Hi Andy, thank you for the speedy replay did not expect that!! I have and can do soldering but it sounds complicated to me so I will leave it for the electric-engineer, he said he would do on 29 December so not too long left. I am curious how he will be doing as he said he wont need to go to ignition and should be OK just ti wire in boot, I will print your version just in case. I use sat nav once in a two months or so and my car seats outside 24/7 so I would not worry about gps signal delays. Fingers cross all will be good, i will post later how things will go.

Thank you very much for taking time to write all that

    this forum rocks!!!

    Merry Christmas

Update: Today finally my car was done with relay fuse and i have got music in the car without taking fuses in and out . One thing to mention tho is that he never got to ignition only on the back where sat nav radio fuses are. No soldering or any serious wiring was needed. He found the digital signal on back and then connected it to relay fuse which is supplying power to all the mmi staff. I can take a picture if somebody wants as you can see where things are connected. he only used few small cables just for the signal he said is more then it needs cos it got no power in it but digital signal. I am very pleased now and all it cost me 30 quid, 500 times cheaper then audi dealer. Radio starts in 5 seconds which is not too bad, cant remember how long it needed before when all was good for comparison.

Dont know where this problem came from... all started when after updating mmi with downloaded 3 cd softwere and using downloaded 2012 version sat nav dvd. Fact is.. i did this to my car as b4 everything was working fine and as it should do. So my advise would to people try to use Genuine parts as Audi said sat nav dvds have some software in it which updates dvd unit and that might been an issue but I guess I will never know this. I am glad now its all over. Looks like i have chucked out good battery not to mention amount of money and time i have spent

    many thanks guys

    Josef
