As soon as I start my 2002 1.9 TDi, it has recently started reporting an excessively high temperature (big flashing red symbol in the warning area in centre of the dash display). This has been disappearing after a couple of minutes. The car has then been running fine with no temperature issues.

I knew I'd have to look into at some point but it's just got worse...

Today, it did the same thing and reported the problem on starting and then soon went away. However, from time to time as I was driving, the high temperature warning would again come on (accompanied with a few beeps). Again, it would go off after a minute or two but it kept coming back.

All the time, the actual water and oil temperature gauges are reporting temperatures to be fine and I've opened the bonnet and see no evidence / no smells of excessive heat.

Is there a separate temperature sensor for the main dash warning display that could be faulty? It seems particularly odd that the gauges are operating fine.

I've tried a search and been unsuccessful in finding someone with the same problem.

Any suggestions or help would be gratefully received.

    Regards

    Dave

The temp sensor has two element, one for the ecu and one for the gauge. I suspect the sensor if failing on the ECU element thus the warning. It is cheaper to change it then get the diagnostics read. Regards Peter

That does sound promising - thank you. Do you know the location of the temperature sensor and I'll try swapping it out.

    Many thanks

Well you have not declared your engine code but I suspect it is an AWX fo the sensore is at the rear of the head held in by a C clip, so you need a new sensor and an O ring. Regards Peter

There is no temp sensor in the header tank. There is a level sensor but that would not raise the warning. Regards Peter
