they fitted the sensor and this didnt resolve the issue.
The mechanic has said its definitely the steering rack now and has told me its a £156 for a new rack, does this come with the torque sensor or is that seperate?

For £156 it will be a bare rack no electric motor, it should have the sensor as like i said it cant be replaced as its part of the column neck, imho £156 sounds far to cheap, when mine went the rack was around £400 the cheapest i could find, so i got a SH one and because we have the 2 mk5's in the house i made sure we had a spare, but we are changing the OHs for a new touran so its now on ebay here is the link http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2307312965...#ht_767wt_1270

he did reset the ecu, but it didnt fix it, until he left it over night and it was fine the next day.... weird

he did check the code when the steering started working and he said the fault code hasnt come back, so far so good.

I'm looking at a Mk5 as a first car for my daughter but concerned about the number of steering rack issues I've read. A fault that goes away overnight does not install confidence in the model as you don't know when/if the problem will come back.

How did you get on? did the fault return again?

My mk5 gti 2.0 also had the red steering light in the dash. I was told that the electric rack cannot be repaired so i replaced the entire rack. However now im struggling to get all the settings and afaptions right. Today the light came on orange and aftet a while went off and the power steering worked... For a while then it came back on red again. I have diagnostic software but only a delphi not VAG
