My car is throwing up this code: 17996 Engine mount solenoid valves Open circuit

Does this mean that my engine mounts are worn? How many are there and how easy can they be changed?

    Cheers

    Presumably you have no symptoms?
I have 17994 short to plus intermittent but I have not identified any related symptoms.
I'd be interested in any suggestions for a cure.

No major symptoms I dont think, maybe theres a bit of shake from the engine now and again, I would have to replace them and then see if there was any difference after. Im assuming that the mounts are just getting worn after 10 years, understandable I guess.

The A4 has electrohydraulic mounts, that adjust stiffness according to engine load to minimise movement to maximise torque transfer, i dont know what detrimental effects a worn/broken mount would cause tbh, as it still acts as a mount, just doesnt change its stiffness.

Never understood how engine mounts work until the above post!

I dont know how common they are, a normal engine mount is just a rubber block bonded to an alloy mount to take out engine vibrations and allow it to move a bit under torque, the A4 (and probably other audis) have this electrohydraulic one, which i assume is either like a damper (shock absorber, although that is an incorrect name for them, the spring is technically the shock absorber in your suspension!) with oil inside and electronic valving to restrict the oils flow, or a magnetic hydraulic fluid, like an oil with metal in it, which changed viscosity with the strength of a magnetic field applied to it.

Its a very common fault code, unless you have serious vibration ignore it!

How do you scan this using vcds? A step by step guide would be useful
