I was in Edinburgh overnight a couple of weeks ago, and parked the car on the Morrison Street NCP car park. When I left it at 7pm it was fine, but next morning at 7am this is what I found. I wondered whether to try some of that polish that fills in scratches and blemishes, but I'm told it might not entirely hide the damage in this case!

As expected, there was no note or apology left, just this nice dent, which I'm told will cost £1450 to sort out.

Whoever you were, you have my sincere and heartfelt admiration for a job well done!

    MF.

Sorry to hear and see that damaged front door. You will be better off to find a second hand door, £1450 is a hell of alot! I hope that guy suffers alot in life, and have his car written off at some point

I think 1.5K is a rip off. I don't think you need so much for that.

Some knocking and perhaps a panel spray work can do the job? Say for £300? I'm not the expert though.

Gutted for you mate, really makes my blood boil when something like this happens & the ignorant sod doesn't do the right thing. Have you contacted the Police to see if there's any CCTV coverage of the car park? Even the entrance, to get a colour match with any cars coming & going with any paint left on your motor?

MF, you have my heartfelt sympathy.....you must be gutted especially as I know you really look after your car!

£1500 does seem a lot, but I guess thats a new door, removing / refitting parts, paint n materials, blending in etc etc, labor and of course vat.

Is it at all possible that one of these SMART repairers may be able to pull the dent and work their magic for much less? It could be worth a call to ask as they paint doesn't seem broken / cracked!

    All my best MF

Thanks! To be honest I have ended up getting onto the insurance company and letting them sort out what needs doing. Once I realised it was going to be more than about £200 to fix it was the only real option. I only have the car for another four months or so (my new car has been ordered), but I don't want it to go to its next owner with a bodged or low quality repair, so rather than investigate who might do the job on the cheap I have gone down the insurance route.

    Cheers!

I think the total includes a new door, stripping the wing and rear door, blending the paint with the newly sprayed front door, refitting everything then clearing the host of fault codes from disconnecting the door module etc (and probably the battery). Plus of course delicious old VAT! :-) I did wonder about whether the door would/could be repaired but it seems not, or at least not to a standard that would be acceptable

    Cheers!

Thanks for the kind thoughts! The car park is really just an old piece of waste ground that NCP charge an arm and a leg to park on - I didn't see any cameras on it at all. Incredibly, there was no paint transfer on my car - just a whacking great dent! I have no clue at all how someone could hit it hard enough to cause so much damage but not leave any traces - it must take long hours of practice to perfect the knack!

I was describing the circumstances of the damage to my insurance company's call centre over the phone, and I ended up with a young lad asking me questions - I think he must have been about 12, with the common sense of a 6 year old! He said he would check if there were any CCTV cameras covering the car park, but I'm not holding out much hope. He was then asking me to describe what happened, so I told him - I parked the car on Morrison Street Car Park at 7pm, came back to it the next morning and found the dent, with no note or explanation. His next question was "At what speed was the vehicle travelling when the damage occurred?" Sigh. After a sad inner smile, I repeated that it was parked overnight, and so was stationary. It got worse - his follow-on question was "What damage did the other vehicle sustain?" Luckily I found it funny, but I think he got a little embarrassed that I was laughing at him!

Lol...yeah, but as you know MF, these guys read off a pre set list "parrot fashion" and common sense ( if there's any in the building? ) does not prevail

Ah Jim, me old mate! Long time no speak!
    !!
The thoughts are very much appreciated! I look on the dent as a nice present from Scotland that I can enjoy telling the grandkids about nostalgically one day! You Scots always make sure we English have an unforgettable visit and are generous to a fault! (Just pulling your leg - Edinburgh is one of my favourite places!)

I sent these pictures to a couple of paintless dent removal outfits locally to see if they could help. One sent me a nice email saying it was "110% a bodyshop repair", and the other received the photos while I was on the phone to him and laughed out loud! The dent is too big and too deep for them to consider, it seems. It was a good thought though - the paint isn't cracked or even scratched in the slightest! I wonder if the perpetrator had cushions fastened to the bumpers of his car???

    Cheers!
