I had the cam belt changed this week, when the guys at my local Audi specialists took the car for a drive, they heard a knocking sound, further investigation revealled a blocked oil pick up pipe, which was effectively depriving the engine of oil. The mechanic suggested the car's previous history of long life servicing may have been a contributing factor. I have had the car almost 2 years, and have had an annual service done since I've owned the car. The mechanic advised me to get rid of the car ASAP. They did notice an improvement in the engine when the pipe was replaced, but are worried that some damage has been done, which could potentially lead to a huge repair bill in the future. The car is a 2005 A4 2.0 tfsi quattro s-line. Has anyone experienced this issue before?

    Regards, Gerry

I'm a diesel man myself but I believe its a common problem with these's cars,it would no doubt be doing it no good but whether its going to be catastrophic in the long run its anyones guess, you may have been lucky and got it just in time,if its quiet now you should be ok,longlife servicing would have contributed to this.

    that's a concern....I have a 2006 version of the same car.

How many miles are on your car? high miles?
What is long life servicing....I mean what constitutes a long life service interval?
I bought my car privately and the maximum service interval hasn't been anymore than around 10k (I have FSH).

Audi Variable Servicing (AVS for short), is the system by which the car monitors the way you drive and works out for itself when it needs to be serviced, subject to a maximum of two years or 20,000 miles. If your car is on AVS, it must be filled with longlife oil. I am not a fan of this.

You can have the AVS system switched to fixed intervals, in which the on board service indicator will flash up when one year or 10,000 miles elapses.

My milage is 70900, the long life servicing was apparently every two years, Audi apparently use long life oil. The car had 65000 miles on the clock when I bought it. It has a full service history, including my servicing which has been annual, the car has been serviced 4 times.

quite often on turbocharged cars - the oil can carburise and block feed pipes. This happens when the car is driven hard and then switched off without the turbo being allowed to cool - the oil around it overheats. hence why you should always idle a turbo'd car before you turn off the engine if you've just given it a bootfull or two....
