NO! We have compulsory winter tyres law here in Germany! Its is Fricking stoopid!

People who live in Cornwall do not need Winters but people in The Highlands of Scotland are irresponsible if they do not use them!

Put the Onnus on the Driver! (Like we had in Germany until NOV last year) Your Insurance will NOT pay out or Reduce the pay-out because you have contributed to the accident, you wou would be amazed how that changes peoples attitudes!

    Common Sense

I am a very PRO winter tyre person, but making it law is un-enforceable!

Making winter tyres law would lead to drivers becoming increasingly complacent - being under the illusion that as they have such tyres they can drive without the extra care and attention winter driving demands. IMHO

I'm sorry, but I disagree completely with the idea.

If someone chooses to fit winter tyres, to aid their cautious winter driving - feel free, but I'll be damned if I'm going to be told I need to fit them when I've driven through 6 winters already without incident.

I'm not gonna sign it either.

I've never had winter tyres on all of my cars that I've owned and last year my quattro performed really well on 255 wide tyres and not once did I get stuck, spin out or slide. The other cars have been 14 - 16 inch tyres and have performed exceptionally well too.

As Esh says, if the petition was to go forward, it could make drivers less cautious when driving on ice/snow as the tyres might give the impression the driver could just drive normally. Also, it would mean people would have to buy rims and tyres (have you seen the price?!)

As of course, this is my opinion and others may disagree.

I use winter tyres but I still wouldn't support it being made law I'm afraid.

As mentioned above, I believe the poor driving we see every day would be even worse as some fools would think they were invincible.

No I agree, making it law is as stupid as these flaming daytime running lights, yes some places need them, others don't. Leave it up to the owner.

Its a bit like being told you have to seperate your rubbish!! Almost nobody does it properly or pays it lip service (or Fly tips!!). Sometimes you have to take responsibility for your OWN actions and "Bite the Bullit! cause "There are peeps who could not give two sshitz!! about anything other than themselves? Sad but True.

Winter Tyres are Life savers!! But Law??

I see the point that most of you guys made here against making fitting winter tyres a law.

However knowing that winter tyres significantly outperforms summer tyres during winter, there might be a case to legislate it for safety reasons. What if it really reduces number of road accidents during winter significantly - will the benefit outweigh the cost? Last 2 winters, I lost count the number of hours spent sitting on roads where an accident has occured.

I wholeheartedly agree that people should be responsible for their actions. As much as most of us here are responsible people, all it takes are some who don't bother. I do think we might want to legislate against these.

    Cheers.

Sorry, but I think its a crazy idea and won't be signing up I'm afraid.

Yes, I believe that they certainly help for sure and for those that want to shell out and use them....great, but, I don't see how its enforceable as law.

Personally, having driven more than a few miles in winter and the severe Scottish winters on all seasons with little / no incidents to report I won't be rushing out to buy them.

There are some that these tyres will help, others that they will not as they don't have the first clue how to drive in winter conditions and you just can't account for these type of drivers I'm afraid.
