Hi, my VW Passat 1.9 TDI (1999) broke down last Tuesday. It was completely dead when I went to drive home after work, there was silence when I turned the key. It wouldn't bump start, or jump start. Eventually did bump it, drove home, turned key and nothing. What I've been instructed to ask you (because I'm a clueless female) is, at first point of ignition the relays click and the lights on my dash (glow plug etc) go crazy, then at second point of ignition everything goes dead. The car won't even tow start now. Battery has been tested and is ok (the battery was charged twice and the car seems to have deadened it). A Tech 2 code reader has been used on it, but it won't let it in comes up with a read error. Has anyone come across this problem please, or has a clue what I should do next? VW dealer hasn't heard of this, suggests they do a code read at £75 (shock/horror) and that it may be my ECU and that, they'd scrap my car because the ECU will cost more than my car is worth

I don't know the answer to your question but I have not heard of a Passat ECU just packing up and we have three in the family. The ignition switch is a likely candidate for failure, more so if you hang a large bunch of keys on your car key ring. I do exactly that and have done over 150k but wouldn't be surprised if mine failed. The crazy flashing of your lights with the ignition on does point to an intermittent ignition switch or similar.

You do need to have a code read first but preferably not at VW dealer prices. Do you have an independant VW Dealer locally? I'm sure if you post your area on this forum there may be someone who could code read your car or advise of an 'indie'. If not the VW Dealer may be your only choice.

My money would be on the ignition switch, not the key-switch but the electrical ignition
switch which is connected to it and is accessed from the other side of the steering column. Cost about £30.

Yep sounds like an ignition switch failure. Regards Peter

A tech 2 code reader is for vauxhall not VW it won't read VW codes. Are you sure the battery is ok. Sounds like a dud battery to me. It could be the main power relay playing up as well as an ignition - lock fault.

All indications of a dead battery, try another one to make sure (no code reader will work if the systems are not powered up by a good battery on the car)
