    Hi

I just know this is going to cost a lot of money!!! I've gone to move my car (V5-170) this morning but can't engage the gears. This problem only occurs when the ignition is switched on - when the ignition is off, the gears can then be engaged. Obviously this means that my car is undriveable.

This is the first time anything like this has occured...and I suspect that it may be something general rather than anything specifically associated with V5's, but if anybody out there has ever heard of anything similar or may have some advice - then please do get in touch.

    Cheers!!

Don't think this is too big a deal, check brake lights are working first, usually it's the switch or occasionally the shift l;ock actuator and finally the wiring. You could also call the local dealer with the VIN, and see if it needs the N4 campaign which is the brake light switch.

Hi there - no, brake lights are working fine...I suspect it may be a clutch problem. I'm trying to arrange a garage pick-up at the moment but will check out your other advice in the meantime.

    Cheers!

I get that problem occasionally in my V5 too.

What I do is put the car in neutral, start it and gently push it into gear while slipping the clutch out very slowly. You will find that the shifter pops into gear as the clutch starts to engage - well that what happens for me anyway.

Good luck with it, hope you get it sorted cheaply...

Here is an update to my original post:

Recovery vehicle came to pick up my car on Monday and take it to a recommended transmission centre near to where I live. They have checked the linkages and hydraulics but have not found any problems there...the next step is to take out the clutch box - which will be done sometime tomorrow - and see if the problem lies there. Needless to say, this is where it can become expensive!!

Thanks for all the above advise nonetheless, and i'll post the outcome...when the outcome can be posted.

    Cheers!
