I don't know if I have a real problem developing here or just a 'feature' of this gearbox but all auto and tip changes are fine apart from 2-3 where the revs seem to increase slightly and for a few seconds until 3rd appears to engage correctly.

e.g. I can change up in tip mode from 2nd to 3rd at about 18mph but the revs don't drop down until I'm doing 23mph and 3rd appears to engage/lock properly.

In auto mode the box does not change up to 3rd until about 23mph where I just get a slight pause before 3rd engages, which when it changes to 4th at about 30 (light use) gives a 7mph range from 3-4?

I drive slow...as you may have guessed. Is this the torque convertor clutch failing to engage or am I just changing up too early?

    Any help/advice

Not sure if we are talking about the same thing, but have a look at my post https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...2.5TDi-Allroad
I have been living with it for the last 10,000 miles, so maybe it is just a 'feature' of the box?

    Toadus,

Yes it sounds a little like yours but only happens when changing from 2 up to 3. The revs don't drop after changing up for a while then 3rd engages and the revs drop.

I can live with it and it's been the same since I got the car (18 months). I just don't want to kill the box if there is a problem developing that could be prevented now, before it gets worse?

    Thanks for answering!

I would get the gearbox oil and filter replaced first before going any further. I also suggest a diagnostic scan just to make sure there are no faults pointing to the torque converter...

Oh yeah, forgot to say I did an oil change on mine. Seems to have made the changes smoother, but didn't cure the issue discussed here. Was worth doing though as the gunk that came out, and that was attached to the magnets was not looking too healthy! No fault codes on mine as yet.

Just to finish the thread, I took it to an auto box specialist who went out in it with me and said he thought it was fine....guess I'm just being over sensitive, I'm sure he wouldn't turn down work!

Mines doing the same. Have been looking around for the cure, even thinking about removing the valve body and cleaning it out.

I too have replaced the oil and filter. Normal driving you don't notice it but quick starts make me feel i might be doing damage.

ELSA workshop manual says delayed or harsh changes could be due to cracked rubber 'dampers in the valve body. They are about £1200 new from audi! ZF parts do a rebuild kit for the gearbox if you dare.
