A6 3.2 Timing Chain!!

Has anyone had timing chain problems on their 3.2l v6 A6. I have a 2006 and its making noise. I was curious if anyone has changed one themselves? Thanks

Sam, the timing chain is located between the engine and transmission which is a changed from older versions that had the belt upfront which needed changing at 100K. usually around $1500 so, where is the noise coming from?

Are you certain that its the timing chain thats making the noise. Usually they are pretty robust and dont normally show any sign of premature wear and tear.

yeah very unlikely for that to happen at 71k mate. I've seen a6's at 250K+ that are still strong.

I have had a number of 3.2 A6's with premature timing chain wear. One that I have serviced twice make a horrid noise on cold start but it soon goes away. When I first changed the oil and filter on it the noises nearly gave me a brown trousers moment!

Yes, it is the timing chain making the noise. It is somewhat intermittant. I think its probably one of the tensioners not pumping up all the way on occasion. It seems to be the worst when its cold outside. By cold outside i mean under 80 degrees F. I am in phoenix AZ, USA, where its easily 100F every day.

The duplex chains stretch due to poor tension, you need to replace the full chain set and tensioners to cure this and it requires the engine removing to do so

No other repair will fix it and its well known from 60k onwards with this engine pre 2009 models in general

If you scope the camshaft sensors you can see the chain is stretched by the pattern.

Oil supply is rarely the cause its poor tensioners and inadequate timing chains, new parts are modified to correct this or check the oil pressure when the fault occurs and its normally the os bank of the engine which rattles the most

I have replaced the tensioners in situ but the fault comes back so replace the lot, around 30 hours labour plus parts

Yea, I had a feeling it was a stretched chain. The audi dealer (Peoria Audi, Phoenix, AZ) is probably one of the worst places I have ever delt with in my life. They charged me $115 dollars to sit in my car and rev the crap out of it in park, and tell me nothing was wrong. I was not happy about that. I will probably just replace the set myself, I was just hoping that the dealer might help me out on it since my main business is Audi related. Where can i get a scope into the cam sensor area? Thank you all very much.
