    Hi there,

I own a 1999 Passat 1.9 TDI. Engine code AFN.

My serpentine belt tensioner is faulty, and needs to be replaced as soon as possible.

I got my new tensioner in the mail today, but cant understand how to replace it.

Have tried to search the forum, but only found info about the 3BG tensioner.

Any writeups, or tips regarding this? How do i get the tensioner out, and the new one in? Can't i just replace the wheel (with bearing) ?

I don't want to put the lock carrier in service position if its not absolutely possible.

    Thanks!

    - Lars

I can't do it with the front end in place, I simply can't get my hands and arms in there.

Is there enough space to get the tensioner out? Or does the fan need to be removed? Also how is the tensioner fastened?

I don’t know, I have never done it that way. I pull the front forward on the pins, remove the fan, then the belt and then change the complete tensioner. Also, whilst in there, check that the alternator one way cutch is working, the pulley should drive clockwise and slip anti clock. These pulleys failing are the main reason the tensioner fails.

The pulley is the alternators ribbed wheel that the belt rides on? And it should only be possibe to turn clockwise, and not counter-clockwise? Or how do i know if it is working?

Sorry about my english, it isnt as good as it could have been..

    Thanks

The pulley (the ribbed wheel) should only drive the alternator clockwise, if you hold the internals of the alternator still carefully with a screwdriver (battery disconnected!), the pulley should slip anticlockwise after overcoming the internal friction. Your English is fine and no doubt a lot better than my knowledge would be of whatever your first language is…

The way Europeans can communicate in English always makes me feel embarrassed the we in the UK hardly ever have a second European language, we are lucky in some ways that English has become universal. In fact some British people cannot write in English as well as you can!

I am in the garage now, removed the serpentine belt. Tried to hold the internals of the alternator still carefully with a screwdriver like you supposed. While doing that i can not turn the pulley clockwise or counter clockwise. It moves until the "blades" hit the screwdriver, and then its locked.

Does that mean that the pulley is defective? How can i be sure that my alternator has this pulley ?
