Hi all, Please help! I recently bought an 04 Audi A4 Avant 1.9 TDI it broke down soon after, first fault was displayed as brake pedal position sensor, I renewed this and had the fault cleared. It was fine for approx a week and it happened again the fault this time was the accelerator pedal position sensor, again I renewed the full pedal unit and cleared the fault. Again it was fine for a couple of weeks then broke down again with the same accelerator pedal position sensor. After reading some of the comments on the forum I have checked the ECU and it appears that someone has had the ECU cover off without removing the rear bolt and smashed the cover. Can anyone tell me, is it likely to be water getting in thats causing the problems? If I renew the cover will this be enough or is there a specific area or plug I need to check for damage? Thanks.

Yes, water in the plugs, very very common. If you look closely you will see one of the pins in the orange plug is heavily corroded.

Hi Crasher, I have just stripped it down only to find that my 2004 a4 doesn't have that orange plug, and the others look fine, do you have any other suggestions please? Thankstunnel 047.jpg

All the throttle pedal signals go though plug T17e (Pins 1 to 6) and this is the white plug, the brake and clutch pedal switch wiring also goes through this plug. Check the terminals (12, 50, 52, 63, 69 and 70) at the ECU plugs to make sure they are not corroded.

after all it seems to be just the water getting in through the cracked ecu cover, I have checked all the plugs and wires for corrosion all seems ok, I have put it all back together
and it has cleared the fault and drives perfect (for how long???). Thanks for all your help

You have to remove the ECU box in the plenum chamber.

Miri1991....you’ll have to remove the wiper blades and the plastic scuttle panel which hides the battery and wiper motor. The ECU is located under there. I had the same problem a little while ago and traced it back to the seal around the ECU cover. It always happened when it had been raining hard, the water gets in and drops down the wiring harness to the pedals.
    Hope this helps.
