audi 80 1992 and vcds

Anyone fancy a bash at this one.
My mate owns a 1992 audi 80, anyway to cut a long story short, he lent the car to his son, but when returned he toasted it, obviously something catastrophc occurred.
He is now rebuilding the engine and has several unknown faults, so can my full version of vcds via his diagnostic plug scan his car and give a readout of known faults, like i can on my audi 2007 a4.
I know i need a different cable, but don,t want to go to the expense if its not possible.

We did one like that yesterday. There are three plugs under the dash, black, tan and blue. You defiantly use the black plug and if I remember rightly the tan one as I tried the blue one and it did not work. The only problem is that you need the 2x2 adapter but if it is KE Motronic you need a sensitive multimeter, an exhaust gas analyser and a special harness adapter for the metering head to step it up. There is an art to setting these up and the number of people who can do them is falling as we retire, die or don’t work in the workshop anymore. What is the engine code, 3A, ABK?

Thanks crasher, i,ve been away for a bit, so sorry for the late reply.

I can,t pretend to understand your well informed answer, but basically are you saying i cannot carry out a scan of the audi 80 without the additional calibration tooling you mention in your reply.
Basically my mates rebuilt the engine from the ground up, but still thinks theres somthing not quite right, so a scan would/could help point him in the right direction.

You can scan it but you can’t accurately set it up.

So in a nutshell its not the same as using the diagnostic plug on my a4 2007, although i know the cable will be different for the audi 80, by that i mean just plugging into the audi 80,s diagnostic plug and printing out the scanned results.

To carry out the fault code read is just a mater of plugging in the 2x2 adapter.
