Sorry to raise this issue again but I have struggled to find a sensible answer to this question.

I have had the infamous police siren noise for 3 years. I have had advice that it is normal and other advise that it is on its way out.

I am satisfied from extensive research including from a turbo specialist THAT NO TURBO SHOULD MAKE THIS NOISE.

Drove to Liverpool yesterday - 40 odd miles. Again completely silent on the motorway. On the side roads, at low speeds, the noise is obtrusive, there is no other word to describe it and it is worse, much worse, when the engine is hot after a longish run. At low speeds it pretty much whines all the time - at higher speeds it goes away.

    So the issue is this.

When do I replace the turbo?

It is up to you, have it rebuilt now and it will cost you £250 ish less than if you have it rebuilt when it goes pop.

I fit rebuilt units; the people I use are very trustworthy and reasonable.

hi crasher, you have confused me now because on many of your previous replys to threads on this subject ,you have said you only fit new genuine turbos because of the warrenty that comes with it,so are you now saying that a rebuilt turbo woud be fine?

This must be my feminine side coming out here (!), the prerogative to change ones mind at will whenever I feel like it! I used to insist on nothing but a genuine turbo but I had to come down to earth and respect peoples pockets in these admittedly straitened times and I have a great company near me who do a smashing job of rebuilding turbos. OK, you don’t get a 24 month labour inclusive warranty but they have been 95% reliable for me and it means I can do the complete job for a couple of hundred pounds less than the price of a VAG exchange turbo in the box, never mind fitted.

My turbo lasted about 2 years with the whining and i had a heavy foot, i opted to go for a reconditioned unit which comes with a 1 year warranty, all in all it cost me €500 with sending the knackered one back to the uk aswell, along with the turbo going it dumped oil into the catalytic converter, so i just cut it out and i have a few more horses.
