    Hi,

I have just taken delivery of the new 2011 Passat and I am trying to get a towbar fitted: preferably a detachable one. Currently nobody at the towbar specialists or dealers that I have spoken to seem to be able to give me clear guidence as to what is or is not achievable. I would prefer a detachable towbar so that there are no signs when it is not in use, but the rear valance on the new Passat does not seem to be suitable. does anyone have any experience? What are the options?

    Thanks

    Hi Simon,

I have checked through with Witter for you, they have stated that the bar VW59AQ will fit the new model (Passat Saloon B7) and will also fit older version to (Passat Saloon B6).

The only differece being the the B6 requires a visable bumper cut of 195mm x 125mm and the B7 has a non visible cut of 195mm x 125mm.

Both the B6 and the B7 require you to remove the bumper and do not require any drilling.

    Chris,

Thanks for your reply, which is very helpful However, the fitters I am talking to are saying that the problem isn't so much the tow bar itself, but the electrics. I am after single electric, which apparently swings up when not in use and it is this movement that requires a large cut?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Simon

    Hi.
the swing up electrics do need more bumper to be cut away. i have seen a couple done, what i have on my B6 is inline sockets which tuck away neatly in the bumper when not in use, easier to connect than having to reach under the bumper. and then there is maintainance. if the socket needs to be changed it can be done easily. i have twin electrics on mine and have made a small padded waterproof bag to put them into when they go inside the bumper so they dont rattle.
