    Hi

I would like some advice please, and go easy on me as i'm a woman, i know a little about cars but not much!

Here's my problem, i bought a Vw Golf GT TDI 2.0 about 4 weeks ago, it's a 54 plate with 81000 miles on the clock, it has this problem that it goes into limp home mode, when you get to about 70 mph and 3000rpm's, which resets when the engine is turned off and back on again, i took it back to the garage and they ran a dianostics check and it showed an over boost at 75mph just over 3000rpm's in 4th gear! They suggested that i either put some diesel cleaner into my tank or use cleaner diesel as they think it's the sensors on either end of the turbo get cacked up with soot! (well thats what they said anyway) i have done some research and lots of people have said to check the MAF so yesterday i took the car and recreated the limp mode, then reset the engine and unplugged the MAF it felt like the turbo wasn't quite there, not as responsive as usual, anyway i drove upto 75mph when limp mode usually kicks in, nothing got right upto 85mph and still no imp mode, plugged MAF back in and sure enough limp mode kicked in at 75mph, do you think i need to change the MAF or could it be something else causing the problem??
I used to own a Vw Bora before the Golf and this also used to do it, although very intermittently, the Golf does it every time you hit the 75mph mark and 3000rpm's!
I'd be glad if anyone could help me with this problem, any advice would be appreciated!

If it let you get over 75mph with maf off, then i think it is a good start. Is there any oil in the maf? it is stamdard, no after market air filter? as sometimes the 'oil' in the cotton can cause the maf sensor to 'choke' up.. 'electrical' cleaner can be used to give it a clean, dont touch it, just spray at it.. its the bit that hangs down in the middle of the maf once you remove it from te car.

More than likely the turbo is clogged up on the exhaust side and will have to come off to be stripped down, cleaned and rebuilt. Remember that if you have another code read done, ignore nay Air Mass Meter (MAF) faults as you have created these by disconnecting it.

It depends on how you approach it. Do the job entirety yourself and don't replace any gaskets then it costs nothing, give the job to VW and approx £1500 for a recon turbo fitted, give it to a VW specialist for a turbo rebuild and you should pay around £850 including an oil and filter change. Be vary wary of going cheap and how rebuilds the turbo, there are a lot of good people out there but some are not so good...

We got a reconditioned turbo from our local garage cost us about £250, we tried going through the warranty but examinations on the turbo came back as wear and tear so paid for it ourselves.

I had this problem on my shuttle , everything pointed to the turbo(over boost) all mechanics said needed new turbo !!! only done 25 k so I thought no way new turbo. it turned out to be the exhaust manifold . the steel manifolds are poor quality and crack around the weld where the pipes fit into the flange that bolts to the head. this leaks exhaust and air tripping limp mode at 70mph. I replaced the manifold with a cast iron one instead of a vw replacement as they only guaranteed them 1 year. they cost a fortune. The cast one I got from a Birmingham company a LOT cheaper. The steel ones are a problem but vw won't admit this.
