Dual Mass Flywheel - convert or not to convert?

My clutch needs replacing and I was wondering if it's worth replacing it with standard solid flywheel. What are the pros and cons?

Not too sure if there is a conversion kit for my car 2006 Passat SE TDI 140 2.0 BKP.

PS. VW dealer quoted £1250 for clutch + dmf replacement. The cheapest quote from a local garage was £525 (£425 parts + £100 labour) - not sure if the parts quality will be OK, but the difference in price is huge for me.

I'm no mechanic, but I would reckon that as it was made with a DMF, then it should stay as a DMF - my (very limited) understanding is that the DMF 'smooths out' the delivery of power/torque so that the gearbox doesn't get wrecked.

Is the £525 for both the clutch and DMF, or just the clutch?

i have thought about this many times, now my main worry is the gearbox was designed with the DMF in mind, ive heard stories that SMF have smashed gearboxes how true that is i dont know, and with mine having been remapped i wouldnt want to run the risk, as and when mine needs doing i will be replacing like for like

Ive replaced a lot of DMF's with normal flywheels on various cars and have never had a problem. But ive no experience on a Passat.

I would always go back to solid, but last time I looked I couldn't find a 1.9 or 2.0 tdi pd B6 solid flywheel conversion. Not one that was guaranteed to fit, just comments like, "we think it fits ok" Which is not good enough for me. Having said that, the dmf does seem to be lasting about 100k miles these days. I don't think the dmf last long with a poor driver or a heavy remap.

I think I'll go for a flywheel then.

The cheapest quote of £525 (£425 parts + £100 labour) is very tempting but it seems unrealisticly low. Can you get a clutch kit + dmf for just £425? I'm sure it will not be as good as OEM part but will it be OK for the next 50-100k miles? I don't think I'm a poor driver and hasn't done remap at all.

They showed us the broken crank of a 2L 16v PD TDI Octavia that had recently been converted to SMF and they suggested this may have been due to the conversion as they have heard of a few breakages like this and all had SMF conversions.

No conversion for me in this case. I'll go for DMF.

Would you say that the item below includes clutch kit or is it the price for dmf only? If it's only for dmf then I don't get how a local garage can offer me new clutch + dmf fitted for £525.

The picture suggests it includes the clutch but the item description suggests it doesn’t, you need to call them and clarify it with them.
