    Hi All,

I need to replace the gear gaiter on my 'V' plate TDI SE, is it actually attached to the gear knob itself or does it just appear that way from the outside?

Anyone happen to have a good one lying around?

    Cheers,

    Tony

eBay seems to yield the best results but make sure the leathers match, I imagine it'd be annoying to have differing colours.

Don't worry, you're allowed two stupid questions before everyone starts sniping

I replaced the gaiter myself a few days ago. Not easy to get the metal clip undone and I broke off a bit of the plastic springy bits. Could not dismantle the gear knob to secure the gaiter- so turned the top of the gaiter inside out and secured to the gear knob collar with a ratchet cable tie. The gear knob was secured to the metal stick using two cable ties. Seems firm enough to prevent any movement. I recommend padding the remaining cable tie ends with a bit of gaffer tape (duct/duck tape) to prevent the gaiter being worn from the inside.

After viewing other threads i decided to try the main ********, £22 for new gaiter, knob and all fittings. At that price for a new one i decided it wasn't worth messing about with second hand parts.

    That's an excellent price.

I should have said to check with our suppliers section for discounts on OEM parts - sorry!

Have picked up the parts from Volkswagen, £22.25 all-in. Comes fully assembled so just had to rip off old knob and gaiter, twist on new knob and clip down the new gaiter. Whole process took 60 seconds in the *********** car park. Result!

Added billy bonus was that it is the later style gearknob with smaller writing and the little chrome surround, looks way nicer than the old one.
