I've had a look but can't find the info about the fuel filter/regulator. A stuck EGR valve wouldn't log a fault code. Not until the engine is running for a while, anyway.
Another thing to try (and this doesn't cost a penny) is to disconnect the exhaust manifold from the engine block. Perhaps the CAT is broken up and is blocking the exhaust system. Remember that scene from Beverly Hills Cop were Axel sticks the bananas up the tailpipe of the cop car? Well, you could have the same problem, only it could be the CAT blocking it in your case.

    Jim.

Sounds to me like the coil packs are the most likely problem. I'm thinking of replacing 2 of them with ones out of a scrappies (£30 for 2 instead of £60 for new ones, and the scrap yard will let me return them if they don't work). If that solves it temporarily, I'd be happy to put in OEM packs if the old ones fail. If it doesn't solve it, I think I'll try disconnecting the exhaust manifold, but I'm not too hopeful about that one...
My only problem is that it looks like I'm gonna have to do it all myself now and I have my final university exam tomorrow morning... and I'm going to East Africa for 3 months on Tuesday night... Have to say, I'm not a happy bunny

Thanks for the help, Flash2 and Crasher. After fitting 2 new coil packs, the car is running perfectly. (FINALLY!!!) Last VAG car I ever buy!

Have a problem with my 1,2 litre AZQ also: Periodic slow cold starting. Runs perfect once started. Keeping ignition on for a minute or so before trying to start helps. Have tried changing a lot of stuff, including the coil pack with a second hand set, no difference...

Could I measure my coils? I guess not, because of the missing pressure during testing?
    Regards John

No, fit three new genuine VAG coil packs and start your own thread instead of resurrecting one that’s seven years old....
