Hi - I have a 2003 Golf GT TDI PD 150bhp with a duff turbo that goes into limp mode whenever I accelerate hard.
The local VW dealer checked it out and said it needs a new turbo (sic) "Variable Vain & Waste gate arm were seized"

    According to them I need a Garrett GT17 VNT - 721021-5006S for 2003 VW Golf 1.9D 150BHP (ARL engine).

Looking at my Haynes manual, it says "the turbocharger cannot be removed from the exhaust manifold and therefore the two must be removed together".

Does this mean that the replacement turbo will come with a new exhaust manifold or are the two separable after removal from the engine?

The turbo is partially integral with the manifold, remove the right hand drive shaft, swear a lot and remove the turbo from below after having a fight with the EGR cooler pipe.

Thanks for the reply Crasher. Just so as I understand properly, are you saying the turbo can be removed without taking the exhaust manifold off?
Can I assume that the turbo unit on it's own is replaceable i.e it doesn't come with an integrated manifold?.

    thanks

No, the turbo and exhaust manifold are integral. I suppose you could remove the turbo centre section without removing the manifold but there is no reason to do this as th problem area is inside the exhaust section which is the manifold.
