And where do you take it to when something goes wrong? Or when it needs a major service? Or fault codes read? Or even a minor service - who's going to have decent oil and where will you find filters for a Touareg? I suppose you could tow a spare one behind you

Seriously though, I'd take an old beetle before I'd trust a vehicle that runs on 0s and 1s!

To the majority its a hypothetical question which in all reality we'll never do. Therefore, I can suggest such a vehicle as it is as likely to ever exist as my chances of driving across Africa. Zero.

The fact is you want something that is sturdy but not over engineered!

Like in the scrubs of a wasteland there are not many approved workshops for ANY car manufacturers. I can say with confidence that after "THE SCRAPPAGE SCHEME SCAM" here in Germany a lot of V.good cars went to AFRICA even though they were meant to be crushed, and the most prevolent was the MERCEDES circa. 1985-1998. I reckon no matter where you are in that "****" (God) foresaken land you will find someone near who will be able to change your diesel injector pump or wheel bearings on a Mercedes.

    Strange! But True

I have had six Land rovers and four Rangerovers over the last 27 years and apart from a broken chassis on the 109" camper 1972 which was caused by a Shell tanker ramming it whilst parked in Newquay, drove it home before finding the damage did the repair at home on the roadside in half a day.

if i were to drive accross Africa i would take my current Range rover project car, with its Mercedes Diesel, big fat tyres and overdrive that works on all gears. never managed to get it stuck yet. towed horse boxes of a boggy field last year where newer toyotas and even Merecedes 4x4's struggled to get off on their own.

take plenty spares and tools most jobs on these Landrover and Range rovers can be done without a workshop.
