Please could anyone help, I have tried to connect a 'Creader V' to my Golf to read the error codes. The reader cannot keeps sending the message 'cannot connect'. I have put a voltage meter on pins 16 and 7, pin 16 give 12volts which appears to be correct, but pin 7 (K-line pin) does NOT show any voltage reading at all. I think pin 7 should show between 2-3 volts.
Any ides what the problem may be ?
    Thanks

Problems with the OBD II socket are very rare, I would suspect the problem lies with your code reader as the Creader V is for OBDII compliant vehicles and your car is not OBDII or EOBD compliant. Pin 16 is permanent live, pin 4 is earth, pins 15 and 7 go to the diagnostic junction box as a two pin plug.

Thanks for your answer, you say my vehicle is NOT OBDII or EOBD, then what is the 16 pin diagnostic plug for ?. I have seen on ebay VAG 405 scanners, do you think they would work on my car ?

The socket is an OBDII type but the cars ECU and software is not OBDII. No UK Golf 3 was ever OBDII. I only use VCDS so I cannot comment on other systems which will work on your car like VCDS does.
