first thing to look for is if the towbar has a box for the electrics , if a trailer is connected can you hear ticking in the boot or even a beep that I had in one of my old cars with an aftermarket towbar fitted ?

Hi, this car has the Audi factory fit towbar. I found a brilliant thread on here which has all the wiring diagrams etc and it has almost 100% convinced me that my issue is in the external towbar socket wiring. If you read the thread (below) it explains everything in great detail.

A6 All road, trailer connected wiring?

Also, just to help others here are 2 pictures from my car. The first is of the back of the light switch on the dash - it shows the grey/white wire (lower far right in pic) which supply's the 12V to the foglight on the tailgate. The second picture shows the connector for the foglight bulb at the tailgate - the grey/white cable can be seen there too - the brown on that connector is the earth.

Just to finish this off, I got the fog light working again - it was indeed corrosion inside the tow hitch electric connection. I stripped it, cleaned it up, checked all the wiring and voltages and put it all back together and all is now good again.

    Hi,

I have a similar problem with my 2004 C5 Allroad. How do you eventually solve this problem?
