Need to change mine as it has done 30K and as per other post car is not running well. However I have heard that once changed I should not keep cranking the engine to prime it, I should prime it first. Any suggestions as to how. I have a large 50 ml syringe, but that's about all for 'sucking'

turn the ignition on, hear the in tank pump run, do this several times, then start. it will probably cut out, so prime again with the pump until it runs. leave ticking over for a few minutes then drive

Just fill the new one with diesel to the brim.
You can also suck at the filter by removing a small bolt on top if you have the correct vacuum tool.
All models have a pump in the tank, but some models/years don't have a delivery pump there, these don't provide any supply to the front of the car, they merely fill an in-tank reservoir and scavenge the corners of the odd-shaped tank.

This is scheduled to be done every 40,000 miles. It is a relatively easy task, and while many people recommend filling the new one with fresh diesel, this shouldn't be necessary as turning the ignition on a couple of times (without starting the engine) should prime it.
Replacing the filter and trying to start the engine (without priming it first) is a good way of checking the condition of the battery, so if you've got a spare, or a means of recharging, do this first!
