Appreciate people's views here, but I'm thinking of maybe changing my Golf MKV GT TDI 140 ( 57 plate)

I really like the car, but do high mileage 25,000 + pa, and maybe thinking that I'd like something a bit more economical ( I prob average 48 mpg - lots of motorway), and maybe a slightly plusher interior.

Thing is what is there out there ? - I could keep the car for a while as I've tended to do, but then what are people's views on the Mk6 GT (maybe with Bluemotion).

This one is the 6th Golf that I've owned in a row, so maybe time for a change, but then if I start to think about other cars, I can't come up with anything else that ticks the boxes of economy, looks, and great interior....

It's a bit of a 'down the pub' type conversation, but I'd be interested in thoughts....

    Thanks

i dont know much about the mk6 but i like the idea of the mpg from the bluemotion, as for other makes i dont think there are many that offer a sim size car with better mpg and interior than the golf, it could be easier for you to take a few on test drives but a 20 min drive doesnt really tell you enough to know if you can live with it day in day out

Id say an upgrade would be the Audi A3, slightly better than VW I'd say.

The cabins are nicer on the A3s, certainly. The rest of it's a Golf 5! There is the new Golf 7 supposedly coming in 2012. Maybe hang on with the 5 until either you get a brand new Golf, or use the fact there is a brand new Golf out to knock down the price of a second-hand 6?

Have you thought about a Passat? We have one as well as our Golf. Even though it's a diesel estate, it goes very quickly (even faster since I had it remapped), does great MPG, has big comfy leather seats, and is a superb long distance car.

We regularly to trips to the continent and it eats the miles. Its also only the small 140 tdi, no need to pay more for the 170.

However, should you want to chuck it around a country lane, it is still surprisingly fun and the mid-range pull is superb. I'd highly recommend one.

I agree with VC-10 i'd hang on for the mk7. I held off buying my mk6 because i didn't want a new old shape car if that makes sense but i have found that i prefer my mk5 to the mk6 sure the engine is quieter and the seats better but mine has already broken at 15k (18 months old) and spent a week with VW.

    Good luck with your decision.
