Is your 'aftermarket' head unit a VW RNS/RCD model? If not, I didn't think that any third party stereo, regardless or nav or not, was affected by the battery drain problem (since you'd use ISO adapters)...

Can you let us know what the model is you want to install - as far as I knew, only the later RCD 310/510 etc models were affected by battery drain issues...

edit: just seen your other post in the other thread. You might want to ignore this post then!!!!!!

Will this actually solve it for our units though? As the car will still be looking for a genuine radio? Is it only revision J+ that will work then??

Lets hope the dude with the fix will email us back sharpish!!

Saying that, some people do not get battery drain... What year is your Passat Manity? Mine's 07, Richie's is 06 I believe..

It would be interesting to see if people who have these units that do not get battery drain have higher revision Gateways??

Going to check mine tomorrow, not even sure if i am getting drain. Has only happened once and thinking back it was around the time the battery packed up. The car is used everyday so i cant even let it stand for a few days to test it......Multimeter will tell the story i hope.

    Battery Drain Issue Solution

It has been more than 10 days since I've tested a solution in 4 cars that had the battery issue problem, I guess it's time to share with you how it works being the fact that none of these cars had the leak.

Myself and a group of guys from a Jetta/Passat Club in Argentina (http://www.jetta-passatclub.com) bought 10 units from Witson and we verified that 5 out of 10 had the battery drain issue.
Witson offered their warranty only if we place a new order. Unbelievable !
A chunk of these units went out to the market and had this fault when connected in a car with Can Gateway 1K0 907 530 L or newer than L.
So we bought 5 Can modules for the units from Witson, we asked them for the new ones, the ones that are being installed on the mk4's but they sent us the same old modules. After changing it fault was not fixed as you can imagine.

Anyway, due to lack of Wiston support in any way, I did some research myself and observed that measuring the total current consumption with the car closed and locked (also the hood) the value was 680mA. Then measuring the consumption of the unit itself was very low. That gave me the idea the current drain can be achieved to the Can Gateway querying the unit and not being able to detect it, that process goes on and on.

The solution was to use a small 12V relay to interrupt the CAN Hi cable from the unit (orange color) to avoid that situation. The idea is to keep connected the orange cable when the ignition key is in position 1 or 2 and interrupted when key it's in position 0, out or the car locked.
To do that the way to power the relay goes like this: one end of the relay coil needs to be connected to ground (black cable) and the other end can be connected either to the lighter or if your car has climatronic you can use the green/black cable at the rightmost on the climatronic connector.
By doing this the total current dropped to a value of 20-30 mA which solves the problem.
