Does anyone have the definitive answer to whether you need to get a golf mk5 reprogrammed for the instrument cluster to work once it has been changed. And will the mileage etc, be transferred from the ecu onto it?

You can transfer the mileage if you are fitting a new cluster.

If you are fitting a used cluster then you will need the services of someone who can 'adjust' the mileage in the used cluster. VW dealers can't do it.
