My brother had a VW Touran hire car today, we had a little test drive and there we noticed park assistant. Where the vehicle automatically reverse into a parking bay. I was pretty surprised that it did all that by it self.

I was planning to get this done on my Passat I had a quick look online, and luckily they are on sale on ebay!

    This is from Poland

Does anyone that sells them in the U.K? I am considering to get this fitted asap!

This is a gadget too far.

Call me old fashioned (I'm fishing for compliments) but the tail is beginning to wag the dog. The driver should be in control of the car, not the other way about. Modern cars are too technologically advanced for our roads and traffic conditions.

When driving a car you are supposedly in control of a lethal weapon, it's like having your finger on the trigger of a gun. Oops! It went off by accident and I didn't mean to kill him. No it didn't, very few guns ever went off by accident (mechincal failure), it went off because of carelessness or recklessness.

So it is with cars on the road.

It is the driver's responsibilty to ensure his car is roadworthy, it is the driver's responsibilty to drive according to the Road Traffic Law and within the spirit of the Highway Code.

So if you reverse park over someone's foot, can you say, "It wasn't me M'Lud, it was the car wot done it?"

    I think not.

That link is only for a retrofit of the front+rear parking sensors. It isn't the kit that will allow the car to park itself.

You'll need more money and parts if you want to retrofit the self-parking system.

'Park Assist' and 'Park Assistant' are different features.

    Issac,

This thread has suddenly turned a bit scary.

In the modern driving test, you have to successfully reverse park or bay park. So who would really need this sort of system?

Those who can't drive properly but have access to very expensive cars?

I can see where you are coming from but I'm afraid I disagree somewhat. Yes, a tonne of metal at 70 mph is a dangerous weapon, but like all dangerous weapons it's how it's used that the risk is introduced.

Properly set up computers don't get drunk, fall asleep, get distracted by something shiney, get bored, get sloppy or suffer from all the traits of humanity that make us human. They also react far faster with significantly more precision and can take corrective action far better when entering the pit of failure which means the outcome is likely to be far better with a computer takeing the controls than a human (humans panic, overcompensate, don't understand, don't react fast enough and end up falling down the pit).

The classic example of this is ABS. A good driver will outbreak ABS, but how many drivers do you know can pulse the brake pedal at the rates ABS systems do? How many people either brake too hard (invoking the ABS) or don't break enough (which is a common problem believe it or not).

Hmmm, I've mixed thoughts on this one. I passed my test in the days before parallel parking was even included. I spent many happy years nonchalently chucking my car perfectly into a parking space first time. It was a matter of pride for me.

But now I have two problems. The first - the Passat estate is like parking a supertanker, worst visibility of rear extremities of any car I've ever had. And yes, I have had a Capri. Some of the spaces in town are barely longer than my car. Second - I'm disabled, so my days of throwing an arm over the passenger seat and looking back are long gone. Nowadays it's all done with mirrors. I don't need a car to auto park for me (yet), but if I was driving an A8, a big Jag or a big Merc I'd have it tomorrow.

And don't forget all those yummy mummies who passed a test in a Micra and now haul a Range Rover Sport around all day. It ought to be a condition of their licences to have electronic aids!

Just Gone - 2008 Passat 2.0CR TDi DSG Estate + toys, 2007 Golf GTI

Once, cars were simple and I was smart. Now things are the other way around.
