Re a8 tech,s reply. Surely the conversion is the other way round? From chain drive to gear drive. There is threads on here for fitting .

Is this problem likely to affect any of the BRD engines - mine is a July 07 build date, just wondered if by then they had found the problem and affected a cure??

    Hello there,

I have same engine in my 05 2.0 tdi Avant. Had serious engine rattle over xmas and thought the worst, i`m a time served mechanic and was sure the noise was coming from the bottom front end of the engine, i even had a stethoscope on the sump! I did some ringing round and found that Audi no longer sell the original parts fitted on that model engine. They modded the parts at the end of 05 I think to gear drive. The plastic 15 pence chain guide fails resulting in the failure....... The only problem labour wise doing the job is removing the gear from the crankshaft. The sump also has to be changed as the oil pump housing is different. Long story short my clutch had gone on the aircon pump - right at the bottom of engine - and the noise was transferring through. My local vw audi specialist was quoting £2000 to do the job with parts which I didnt think was bad. He had 2 BLB`S in with the same fault! See if this link works - tp://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-AUDI-2-0-TD...item45f78b52ec
just to show you the plastic guide.

    Hope this is of use

    Dan
