I have a A4 1.9 TDI Quattro 2002(90,000mls) that wont start. Had LP fuel pump fitted in the rear tank last year (was having same starting problems before pump was fitted) and have been told that the HP pump is now at fault. Both starting problems was during a very cold spell of weather. Is it possible that it just might be water in the system or a blocked fuel filter/ dirty fuel/injector etc. Had filter fitted about 18 months ago and have put about 10,000 miles on the clock since both filter and LP pump were fitted. Could this be an electrical fault?
No warning light on display. How common is it for 2 pumps to fail within a year of each other. Is it a common problem with the A4 tdi and vw passat engine. Was there ever a recall on these components? Hope its something simple cause new HP pump is quite expensive.

Having the same problem with my 2002 130 tdi too.

Problem was not starting if left for more than a day.

Takes about 30 seconds of cranking to get is started. 10second on 10 seconds off, etc.

Fault was the tandem HP fuel pump leaking. The front plate of the pump is leaking so replacing the pump to head gasket (of which there are two types depending on the type of pump) did not stop the leak.
There is a 'how to' on a golf web site http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/t/315312.aspx
on how to stop the leak from the tandem cover.

Your right about the recall but apparently it was for 2003+ engines.

Also if the diesel has been leaking for a while it will eat away at a coolant hose under the pump which will baloon out then burst in time.

I had to replace the hose but the pump is still leaking as i haven't had time yet to reseal the cover yet.

    Thanks Columbo,

Diagnostics showed up no faults... Mechanic got it started again, said he blew out the HP pump as he could find no other faults.... Purring again like it always does. I was parked on a slight incline with the front half raised when it wouldnt start...Would this have any significance..Some of the other threads have reported same problem while car was slightly raised at the front ie parked on incline, which suggests there may be a fuel leak or fuel drain back.
Same thing happened last year almost a year to the date , had LP pump fitted, car was fine and now this. Very frustrating, just hope all my troubles are over.
