Hi, I am an ex-audi coupe owner. Reluctantly, had to change cars when i had kids as the child seats wouldn't fit in the coupe - shame. now am driving a saab but am looking to buy an a4 avant tdi. the one i've been looking at has the tdi badge in all silver, and the tdi on the engine block is in all white. however, the current owner insists it is a 110 bhp and not a 90. the vehicle is a 99 t reg and he asserts that it is the last of the old engines, the red i now relates to 115s and that this is in fact 110. Can anyone help me clarify this please? what is the relevance of engine number in identifying the bhp? i did read a posting along these lines but it seemed to relate to vws.... i would be grateful for any advice and look forward to again being an audi driver....

hello and welcome, being a new member ill answer but try a search in future, they're very handy

forget the badges, the red or the silver I's they're useless.....

look in the spare wheel well in the boot, there should be a sticker with a 3 digit code there.

there is also the inside of the service book

and if you take alook under the bonnet, on the timing belt cover, the 3 digit engine code is there too, the engine codes relate to the BHP as follows :

    ATD --74 kilowatt --100 bhp
    AJM -- 85 kw --115 bhp
    ASZ -- 96 kw --130 bhp
    ARL -- 110 kw --150 bhp
