    Hi,
I bought a Golf mk5 S Sdi 58 reg recently. The problem I'm having is that its difficult to shift down to 2nd gear when slowing down but if you go to into 1st and then into 2nd it goes in fine. Its only done 24K miles. Could anyone suggest what may be the problem?? I know its under warranty but I would rather have some sort of background into the problem before I go to dealers as I don't trust them anymore!!! (problems with my BMW last time and the dealers messed me about big time)

It could be a clutch drag issue or a box problem, both are a common issue. I suggest you register the fault with the dealer before the end of the warranty gets close. You could try having the oil changed to something like Red Line MT90 and Slick 50 additive, which I find works very well but this should only be done when the box is out of warranty.

Firstly thanks for the reply, greatly appreciate your help.

Had it looked at my brother's garage today. It seems like the linkages are hitting on the starter motor casing etc at the point of going from neutral to second, from third to second etc. Plus I've been trying to be gentle when shifting down to second and it seems to go in as long as I don't force it. There is no crunching or clonking at all. I guess I'm glad its not the gearbox even though it would/should be covered under warranty. I'm going to try and get them adjusted or replaced tomorrow.
