Having smokey and lumpy cold starts these cold mornings i decided to replace the glowplugs.

Checked all the resistance and they are all around 130 ohms - bad.

Set to it after a long drive so the engine was warm (read many people recomending doing it warm).
First one i tried really tight, not using too much tourque undoing it, then it suddenly became very easy and just kept turning ...... Aghhh!

Has anyone sucessfully removed a snapped glow plug using easy outs extractors and drilling?

Don't know whether to carry on or give up. Started the engine and checked i still have compression, looks and sounds ok.

thanks, ran many searches before posting, nothing with any solutions came up.

Going to try the week of WD40 soaking then try again for the rest.

Will see if the 1 out of 6 will be a problem after i've replaced the rest.

WD40 is not the way forward. Plusgas is far better then with a removal tool then Loctite freeze release may be your saviour.
    Regards Peter

A quick search for "Glowplug snapped" came up with this thread which linked to this other thread which has some very useful advice from our resident experts Peter D and Crasher.

    This should help.

You don't really need the 6 anyway. VAG engines are renound for being able to start on very few plugs.
If it comes out then happy days, if not then plug over it with liquid metal to seal it up and go with the 5.

Yes Plus Gas is excellent, there are some people on Ebay selling it at a good price. I couldn't find it locally (although I didn't look that hard).

What is snapping? I have six waiting for the weekend to fit.
The threaded shank is the same part as the hexagon, so I can't see how this could snap, are the originals a different design or does it literally shear?

The old plugs are made of an aluminised steel alloy and being dissimilar metals (the head and plugs) they will corode so the plug will just shear off. The new plugs are made off stainless steel wich is even softer than the old ones but they wont corode but that does not stops the head corodding around the plugs. Use plus gas as its the only good penetrating oil wich will work and make shure you spray them every day for a few days prior removal just to be on the safe side !
