Hi, My Audi A4 Avant 1.6 1999 B5 has all the signs of a stuck open thermostat but I don't know where it is located on the engine

My car has the ARM engine btw.

I've had the plastic housing off the back of the head where the temp sensor is and there's nothing in there, doesn't look like a stat would fit in either as the flange isn't circular, more of an offset oval.

The only other place I can see is on the side of the block behind the alternator where the bottom rad hose is connected, the flange looks too small for the stat I got from ECP though.

Anybody know for sure where it is ?

Ordered a haynes manual from amazon but it's taking too long.

The car heats up to temp in traffic but drops to 60 degrees on the move.

    Thanks in advance,

    Iain T

Thats where it at, follow bottom hose. The plastic housing only holds the `top` of the `Stat.
make sure you place the `O` ring on the correct side of the `stat.

Thanks for the info Alan, turns out I had the wrong stat.

Job done, what a swine to get at, alternator needed to come off for better access but that involves taking the fan off which looks like the rad needs to come out.

Managed to do it with the alternator in place, lots of lost knuckle skin and scratched arms but all is now warm and toasty

    Cheers,

    Iain T
