Hi there, the title says it all really, Daughters Beetle, 1.6SR has intermittently been running really rough at idle, but now its taken a turn for the worse and the lumpy idle has become considerably rougher, the exhaust sounds like its 'popping' which I can only liken to mini backfires......
It was intermittent, now its pretty much there all the time.......

Also, and I'm not sure if the two are linked, when I took it for a test drive to see how bad the misfire was, I suffered a noticable loss of power, which I can only say was like when you run out of petrol, revs dropped to just under 1000rpm and pumping the accelerator did nothing, but after three or four pumps, it kicked back into life and was OK for a few minutes then same sequence of events

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could cause both of these symptoms ?

AND, if it comes to it and I have to find someone with the diagnostic gear, does anyone have any suggestions for the Croydon area ??

    Thanks in advance

    Pete

You must start with a fault code read, it could be any one of a dozen different problems and you would be very fortunate for a guess to be correct. I suspect there will be lambda faults stored and possibly a coolant temperature sender fault. There must be a local VAG specialist in Croydon, try

Crasher, thanks for the advice, I did in fact buy one of those ebay VAG diagnostic cables that arrived today, so Ill plug that in and see what it says, I suspect the information will be limited though.
If it doesnt help, then TuningWerkes do a basic diagnostic for £35, so Ill bite the bullet and go there.

Thanks for taking the time to reply and for the suggestion of where to go

Hello again everyone, I thought I would put an update in here in case anyone else had this issue.

Took the car to tuningwerks as suggested by Crasher, and as he thought, their diagnostics picked up loads of different codes, although they did say that one code can be the result of another fault...........Anyway, to cut a long story short, he decided to 'clear' all of the faults using his diagnostic software and she drove as sweet as a nut for about a week until the poor idle returned, but as yet, no sign of the loss of power.

I have now bought a temp sender as that is, apparently, notorious for confusing the engine management.
Once I get that on, Ill see how it is.
Anyone have a guide on replacing it? Or is it obvious and easy?

PS Would recommend tuningwerks if they are anywhere near your location.......

    Had this problem.

Clearing the codes isn't a fix...it just clears the codes and they come back over time.

My wifes beetle was driving me bonkers on this one but eventually I sussed it out.

firstly, poor charging. Excitation wire from the alternator goes under the battery tray to a connector, from here it goes to the dash for the batt light. My connector was cruddy and not seated correctly.

Secondly, my battery was poor, so replaced with a new one.

Still had problems after this so did this:

Checked the MAF - this was poor, so replaced it Hitachi unit. Flow graphs were perfect after this.

Still had problems, but a little better so did this:

Checked for Vac leaks on a running engine, sprayed easy start all around the engine, looking for a leak that would make the revs go up....no leaks so was OK.

    So did this:

I preformed a throttle body recalibration, using the ross tech software and the ELSA win workshop manual. Its fairly easy but needs to be done as it sets up the TB to the limp home springs that open the TB slightly incase of ECU issues....if this is incorrect, the TB would not be in the right place so the ECU will be constantly trying to drive it to another position, which will affect the engine running, which will then cause stalls and spurious revs blips. Just remember the TB is a fly by wire system, there is no physical cable from the pedal to the TB, like an old carb system.....so if the ECU isn't set up right, it wont control the TB right!

I also checked the lamba sensor heater and cleared the correction figures from this as they had maxed out due to a poorly running engine.

I also ran an EGR valve calibration.

2 months later NO PROBLEMS, no lights, no engine issues ALL GOOD. It runs so smoothly I'm amazed.

I did take me a couple of months of hair pulling to get there though. But all OK now. Car has done 105K miles and I'm very happy with it now.

Ross tech ECU leads can be bought from Ebay. (USB to OBD2)
ELSA win workshop manual, same place. Get the VW..contains ALL VW range.

As for the software, you can buy this from ross tech or 'find' it on torrentz websites.

    I hope this helps.

Blimey, you certainly have some patience, I would have been doing a Basil Fawlty and beating her with a tree branch long before.........
Ive checked the battery/alternator, or rather had them checked and both are good.
I changed the temp sensor OK but didnt seem to improve things much and I was considering the MAF as my next port of call, is it a simple swap process ?
Now Ill be honest, after this point in your text you pretty much lost me as Im OK with straight forward stuff but recalibration and the like just confuses me.
I did purchase one of those cables from ebay and despite apparently running through all the different sections, engine, electrics etc it didnt return anything at all. I wondered if this was because I had the 'lite' version but when I saw it was $99 to register/upgrade, I wondered if this was even worth it......
I guess the most annoying thing is, its really intermittent and I cant honestly say there is a particular thing that sets it off, sometimes its cold and its rough, next cold day she is fine. Then it will do it mid way through a long run on a motorway when its been fine for 30 miles.
Anyway, I could go on all day, but I really do appreciate your input and Im sure the more technical bods with the same problem will make more use of this than I ever can !

Pm me your email and I'll send you everything you need to do. It's not too hard really. If you have the lead the rest is just software and instructions. Will take me a few days to get the instructions out though as my elsawin isn't installed at mo as had to rebuild laptop. Patience wasn't a choice! I couldn't sell it like it was and refused to pay a vw monkey hundreds of pounds to tell me I needed a new tb, which I didn't! just went through each problem one at a time. I'll also send you a graph of the maf flows against revs then you'll see what to look for. Maf is an easy swap out nothing technical. Chat soon!

I have the same problem with a VW Jetta 4 1.6SR, it even has a funny smell in the engine this is the info I came across so far..

    Symptoms

    • Check Engine Light flashing
    • Rough running, hesitation, and/or jerking when accelerating
    • In most cases, there are no adverse conditions noticed by the driver
    • In some cases, there may be performance problems, such as dying at stop signs or rough idling, hesitation, misfires or lack of power (especially during acceleration), and a decrease in fuel economy

    Common Problems That Trigger theP0304

    • Worn out spark plugs, ignition wires, coil(s), distributor cap and rotor (when applicable)
    • Incorrect ignition timing
    • Vacuum leak(s)
    • Low or weak fuel pressure
    • Improperly functioning EGR system
    • Defective Mass Air Flow Sensor
    • Defective Crankshaft and/or Camshaft Sensor
    • Defective Throttle Position Sensor
    • Mechanical engine problems (i.e.—low compression, leaking head gasket(s), or valve problems

    Common Misdiagnoses

    • Fuel Injectors
    • Oxygen Sensor(s)
    • Powertrain/Drivetrain problems

So do you have the results of a scan that show a misfire on number four, fault code number 16688?
