    Hi,

I have just picked up a 1998 Audi A3. The bloke I bought her from took out the sony stereo and gave me the standard unit to fit. I have had it fitted as it locked itself in safe mode and only the front speakers are connected. I have been told this is because someone at some point has had amps and subwoofers in there (wiring is still intact for these) so they have cut the wires for the rear speakers and connected them through the amp. Without it costing nearly £90 for 2 hours labour to reconnect the back speakers, can anyone on here help? When I was younger I used to fit the stereos in my Escort and Nova so am not completely clueless but am struggling for a starting point. As I use the Ipod thing I didn't want to fork out for a CD player that I probably will use rarely. Plus it has a 6 CD changer in the boot (which does not want to work) Sorry to ramble but would appreciate some help with this so I don't frazzle the car

    Thank you very much
    Lou

Without knowing or being able see what has been butchered behind the stereo its difficult to say exactly what you need to do.

Basically you need to undo whatever was done to make the Sony stereo work, you need to get behind your stereo and see what is there, then try and find/repair the wiring for the rear speakers (&amp if your A3 has the Audi amp fitted?)

If electrics arent your strong point then maybe paying someone to sort it might be best? However, If you're quite 'handy' then with a little investgation in the car it shouldn't be too hard to get it sorted.

It has been a few years since my stereo fitting days so am a little rusty. All the wiring is complete with the plastic inserts apart from the back 2 which have been cut. There are 6 speaker wires running from the back to the front and am sure 2 of those wires belong to the back speakers. Just trying to figure out which 2 without doing myself damage! Am wondering if its worth the bother and just buy a new head unit and let whoever is fitting it figure it out?!!
    Thanks
    Louise

You can use a multi-meter (if you have one) to test the speaker wires, or put a AAA battery between 2 wires, when you put a wire on each of the battery the speaker will make a popping noise (when you have the right wires, if you have the wrong wires then the speaker will be silent)
