Mk5 Golf 2.0 TDI - where's the pollen filter (if fitted)? I've got a smell rather like there's an old tramp in the car, when I switch the A/C on. Other cars I've had (non VW) have done the same, and this has been fixed with a new pollen filter and a disinfectant spray into the Air Conditioning pipework (kills the bacteria which causes the smell), but where is the filter, and how do I get it out?

Don't want to pay the dealer for something I can do . . .

Cant really answer your question mate but i can agree with what your saying!

I have an mk4 and was stinkin for weeks, didnt have a clue where it was coming from, must have steam cleaned the seats 5 times it was so annoying! Anyway in the end someone mentioned the pollen filter and the smell dissapeared after a change, phew, was i relieved.

on the mk4, the pollen filter (as you look at the engine bay) is at the top right corner, it has its own little section whcih you have to unscrew, i would have thought the mk5 would be similar....

take a look under the bonnet, it will more than likely be right under the windscreen whereever it is, ill do a quick search and see if i can find out for u

good god, ill stick to my mk4s, why put it there? bit silly.

lol love the first part of that thread about the strong belly pan/sump protector, i've had a few near misses and scrapes, its reassuring to know the underneath is strong.

everyone whined when the filter was out in the rain in the Passat so I guess they did something about it.

Job done - piece of cake! anyone with this problem, just follow the really good guide provided. Remember to spray out the pipework with an antibacterial cleaner for maximum benefit. Takes 30 minutes max.

    THANKS TO ALL!!!!!!
