I've seen on another forum that there is an official VW update to the 1.6 TDI engine software that has been released to cure poor fuel consumption on the earlier 2009 models. Can any one confirm this ? Any details would be much appreciated.
I've always had an issue with the poor fuel consumption on this model since I took delivery as despite driving in economy mode , the best I could achieve was about 56mpg . This is a long way from the VW bench test results.

Hi, can you say what forum you saw this info on?

I'm getting about 65mpg overall from my 2009 Bluemotion, which is not far off the mark off VW's claimed 68.9mpg, but that's driving with a feather-light right foot all the time. Can't get anywhere near the 80mpg extra-urban, and 62.8 urban mpg's...

    Cheers

It was on the Skoda forum . Member had his 1.6 TDI 90bhp engine software in his Fabia updated and this made a significant consumption improvement . He also said that a similar update was available for the VW 1.6 TDI engine.
I've only completed a small mileage ( 3.5K) but had hoped by this time to see a major improvement.

I'd suggest you need a far greater mileage before seeing a major improvement.

I knew someone would say that . I appreciate it will get better as the mileage increases but even with economy style driving the best I can get is 56mpg on a favourable long run . i.e. no hold-ups or excessive wind and cruising at 65-70 mph.
Under similar conditions I can get 60 mpg from a 2010 Octavia estate 1.9 TDI with only a few hundred miles to it's credit.
But back to the question - does anyone know about any software update ?

Oh yeah, we did go off topic a bit (all got our own stories to tell )

My Bluemotion's going back to the dealers in a week or so for them to sort out rattling doors so I'll ask them about it while I'm there and post back to let you know...

Would be interested to hear. On my bluemotion I've only averaged 44mpg!

Fair enough not a lot of motorway but probably a 50/50 split.
Arrived on 29th September: MK6 Golf Bluemotion SE - Reflex Silver

Mine will be in for its second service in 3 or 4 weeks so i'll ask - i did raise the economy with them at the last service, but all checked as OK. Gentle throttle and long a roads trips = 70+mpg. 80mph motorway and hard acceleration = 45-48mpg.

that would be great to know if there's an update for the 1.6 (105) TDI as the Op mentioned it being the less powerful 1.6.

I think the 105PS is the most powerful 1.6 TDI- there are 90PS versions in the Golf S and the Polo, and the Polo came with a 75PS version of the engine before the 1.2 TDI came along!
