    Dear all,

There I was cruising down the M42 the other night in my 98 estate (1.8 TDI / AFN) when there was a soft clunk somewhere, the engine refused to accelerate and after a few seconds smoke started pouring through the air con, the engine lost all power and red lined. Refused to stop red lining until I took the key out (this was only a couple of seconds, but seemed like much longer!). So, ignoring the "how long it finally took me and my young family recovered home story", I'm now in the situtation of trying to work out what to do.

The recovery chap (sent by the AA, but not AA himself) reckoned Turbo (and it did have some strange whistling noises prior to this that I was trying to diagnose by changing various pipes).

So given that, any advice on what to do next: does this sound like Turbo failure to anyone else? Is there likely to have been much damage to anything else (i.e. if I replace the Turbo is that likely to sort it) (I'm guessing there could be damaged to the CAT if the Turbo has completely imploded but I have no idea) and so on.

I've got the number of a mechanic who's been recommended to me but I don't want to have to shell out a grand or so if just switching the turbo is likely to fix it; similarly I don't want to waste the time and money on fitting one if that's nothing to do with it.

Any advice very, very gratefully recieved!!!

    Cheers,
    Paul.

The fact that the engine red lined suggets the turbo seal has failed and the engine is sucking in it's own engine oil. With luck this means you need an exchange turbo. The state of the turbo when removed will tell you if any bits of turbo have got into the charge cooler pipes. The catalyst will probably be ok. The engine and exhaust will smoke for a while until the oil has burnt off.

Would that make sense in terms of high oil usage and the weird whistling sound (bit like a siren) for a while now? I'm guessing if the Turbo seal has been on the way out that could explain those symptoms?

Many thanks for your reply by the way - it seemed a pretty spectacular failure at the time and I'm a bit more hopeful of getting my Passat back now!

You often can't see out the back window when the turbo seal goes. Huge amounts of smoke. As long as the engine is stopped as quick as possible, you are usually ok. You will need a new or recon turbo with new oil feed pipe. Getting oil out of the charge cooler and it's pipes is not fun.
