After starting my car up this morning I got the dreaded 'STOP' on the dash and asked me to chk the coolant. There was no coolant in the tank and I noticed some water running underneath the car - but none where the car was parked overnight.

About 5 weeks ago I noticed a coolant smell from the aircon after having a run-in with a wooden pallet on the street. At that stage there was no loss from the expansion tank - full as always. Coincidentally I had it serviced 3 weeks ago and I asked them to take a look - they found nothing. the coolant level has been full since until now.

Additionally on the 1st really frosty night last week I noticed that the condensation inside the car was not clearing as normal in the morning. Could the coolant loss, condensation and coolant smell issues all be related??

Need some help as my fear is anything from a cracked water pipe to a head gasket failure!!

Is that the AJM engine? I had a golf with that engine and found out shortly after buying it that they were reasonably prone to HG failure. Mine would be fine until you started pressing on a bit, the the coolant would drop. Tried everything to sort it, changed the cap, thermostat, coolant, checked the rad, looked for leaks, and nothing stopped it. After all this I had the HG changed and sure enough it had been blowing between no1 and the water jacket.
