This can be a plenum chamber water problem but can also be the seal failing under the ECU electronics box and the water can enter without the plenum chamber being full of water. Any debris (leaves etc ) stuck behind and to the side of the box will not help. You will have to lift the carpet with blocks of wood and a fan heater securely positioned for many hours. Also you will/may find the rear carpets are wet underneath. Regards Peter

Apologies for jumping in here, never used a forum before was just trying to find some help myself. I have a 2002 Automatic A6 2.4SE multitronic. Which has a few problems, not sure if they are linked but they are

Reverse gear doesn't always engage properly
Gear selection on dash constantly flashes
Car almost seems to stall sometimes when slowing down to approach a junction
Seems to jump out of gear, though not for a while now.

Engine management light is on now, though has done this in the past and gone out after a while

A local gearbox specialist quoteD at least £1250 to sort this out, car is barely worth £500 as electric windows are a problem too, though thats a minor detail at the moment, so I am just driving it into the ground till it stops one day!

Was suggested to check the transmission fluid level, but that seems none to straightforward, is there a warning light for this anyway, I think it is a sealed unit so should last the life of the car? Is this right?

Read some threads listing some of the above faults could be down to the ECU, which I thought would be within the gear box, but could be inside the car?

Also there are companys that seem to recondition these for around £200 is this worth doing.

    Sorry to ramble on

    Any help greatly appreciated

    Thanks
    Neil

As documented in previous threads I have the PRND432 all lighting at once and the car dropping into limp mode.
I have pulled the carpet up on the passenger side and found what I hope to be the gearbox ecu. I have removed the box and all the connections from the unit. Reading other threads I am a bit confused as to wether this is the correct unit or a convenience unit that controls all the central locking etc.
Do I have to remove the seat to find the gearbox ecu or is this the correct unit?
The part number on the top is as follows; 4B0 962 258 H
It also has Turverriegelung on the case and a further number below the above number. It says VDO 410 215/006/008.
And another thing, it has a small white printed block which has the following on it; 478 02/01
All of you specialists who contribute to this forum deserve a good pat on the back, having read some of the assistance you offer it is great to see there are other good people around!
Apologies this has become a long thread.
